Dr. Karl KnopfEnjoyable Activities to Keep You Fit & Energized

Presented by Dr. Karl Knopf

What’s age got to do with it? It’s just a state of mind, just a number, Dr. Karl Knopf reminds us. What’s more important is how we feel, how we act, and how we play. Dr. Karl, as his students call him, has been involved in lifetime health and fitness for over 30 years. At Live to 100, he’ll show us how to enjoy life more by becoming fit, flexible and energetic.

The fountain of youth has been discovered, Dr. Karl says. It’s not in a bottle, a pill, or an injection but is found in a daily dose of sensible physical activity. Our longevity is in our hands: 30 percent of it lies in our genes, leaving 70 percent up to us. We have the knowledge to make a significant change in our quality—and quantity—of life. Research shows that with proper exercise and nutrition, fit 60-year-olds can retain 80 percent of the strength they had when they were 25. Just taking a brisk daily walk can slow down the effects of aging and can greatly improve aerobic capacity. Lifting weights a couple of times a week can recapture strength and rebuild muscle.

The road to fitness has to be enjoyable. Most people don’t stick with a fitness program long enough to feel the benefits. Many drop out because they’re not having fun or it doesn’t “feel good.” However, we will continue with activities that are enjoyable. Dr. Karl will encourage us to begin exercising for health reasons but says that we’ll probably stick with it for other reasons—for the friends we meet, the extra energy we feel, our improved self-esteem, not to mention the fun we’re having!

With over 30 years in lifetime health and fitness, Dr. Karl has worked in almost every aspect of the industry from personal trainer and therapist to consultant at major Universities including Stanford, the University of North Carolina and the University of California, as well as the State of California and professional organizations. He’s written seven books and numerous articles. He is a frequent guest on Public Television's "Sit and Be Fit," a regular guest on radio, and is often featured in print media. Currently, Karl is Coordinator of the Adaptive Fitness Technician Program and Life Long Learning Institute at Foothill College, Los Altos Hills California, where he has taught Adaptive PE for almost 30 years.
