Yoga studios and classes are popping up everywhere. It originated in India over 3,000 years ago is now exploding into our modern lifestyle. People are finding yoga to be the perfect low-impact way to become fit, enjoy better health, and find relief from stress. Classes are now available everywhere and anyone, regardless or body type, age, experience, or physical abilities, can practice yoga.
Yoga is both physical and mental. As your personal experience develops over time it is referred to as "your practice.” The physical part of your yoga practice will help you to slowly build strength and flexibility. The mental aspect of yoga helps train the mind to be more focused and powerful. As you concentrate intently on your breathing and the deliberate movement of specific muscle groups, it brings calmness to your mind. While holding each pose, or asana, the emphasis is on being in the present moment. This “time out” is the perfect stress reducer because it frees you from worry over the past and anxiety about the future.
The word, yoga, comes from a Sanskrit word which means “to unite.” The poses and breathing help you to have a closer awareness of your body and mind. As you feel more connected to your own body, you will feel more connected to other people, nature, and the universe.
Yoga is noncompetitive, which fosters acceptance and appreciation for each individual person. Each class ends with the teacher and students saying the word “Namaste” while bowing the head. In yoga, this is a sign of respect and gratitude which means "The light within me honors the light within you."
